That was the question posed by columnist Charles Krauthammer. Joanie Vogel of the Washington Post came right out and declared that Barack Obama is a narcissist. Seems like this new wave of hate from the right stems from the news that Obama is planning to give a speech in Berlin later this month. It is speculated that close to a million people will turn out to hear the Democratic nominee speak at the historic Victory Column.
Forget that this event could be a watershed for American politics. Ignore the fact that this appearance could be the first real step in improving the United States’ status in the world. Dismiss the notion that folks outside of America are ready for a change as well. Just keep up with the name calling. It’s worked well so far right?
Then again, maybe it hasn’t. The Obama campaign hauled in a staggering 52 million dollars last month. The Senator from Illinois is leading in nearly every poll and even Obama merchandise is outselling McCain’s. Mumbled threats of mutilation by Jesse Jackson, harebrained satire from The New Yorker, and part three of Rush Limbaugh’s “Operation Chaos: The Obama Contest Edition” were all unsuccessful in blunting the Obama momentum. The Republican stalwarts were left scratching their heads and muttering to themselves and to any talking head that would listen, “Who IS this guy?”
I know what he’s not. He’s not a Muslim. He’s not a radical black militant. He isn’t in bed with the terrorists. He’s not an elitist. He’s not naive. He’s not a flip flopper. He’s not a narcissist. He’s just a politician who happens to be beating the best politicians at their very own game with a series of strategic masterstrokes.
That’s why he is able to break convention and embark on a world trip in the middle of a political campaign and possibly draw the biggest crowd in political history. That’s why he’s hogging the media spotlight from the “Straight Talk Express”, much to the irritation of John McCain-friend of the press.
Who does Obama think he is? He thinks he can be President of the United States and I think he will be.
