shoe fetish part two

A couple of years ago, I wrote an entry about my disdain for shoes. Specifically, the ordeal of shopping for shoes. I have huge feet and cute shoes just don’t come in my size. Two years later, my feelings about shoe shopping haven’t changed that much, even though I’ve found some online stores that carry shoes in my size. /what has changed is my feeling about shoes. I understand why women love shoes. I love shoes. I really like crazy looking and outrageous shoes. Not to wear, but to just look at.

I’m fascinated by the physics involved in sporting 5-inch stilettos. I crave the power that some women feel when they sport sky-high platforms. I crave the feeling of having legs that look like they go on forever in a pair of F.M pumps. I also respect and admire the creativity involved in designing novel shoes. Even though I probably could never afford a pair of  couture shoes, I can’t stop looking at them. I can’t help wondering what it would feel like to slip a pair of them on.

  I’ve been listening to Prince as long as I can remember. Even when I was too young to know what his more adult themed songs were about, he has always been a part of my musical landscape. Sure there were other artists that caught my fancy through the years, but Prince Rogers Nelson was always a permanent fixture on my turntable. 

Prince is known for not only being an astounding musician, he is one of the most prolific. He’s released 24 full length studio albums since 1978, and dozens of singles. It’s rather difficult to choose favorites from so many, but I’m going to try in this post.

Note: These are MY favorite songs. They aren’t necessarily his most well known or his best selling but for one reason or many, they have stuck with me. I hope there are some of your favorites too.

• Private Joy-(Controversy) If only for just that one line, “If anybody ask you, you belong to Prince.”
• Computer Blue-(Purple Rain) I love the guitar solo. It’s absolutely gorgeous.
• Lady Cab Driver-(1999) Although it’s over 8 minutes long, the funky bass line is enough to keep your interest.
• Annie Christian-(Controversy) One of his strangest songs, but can a song about the Antichrist be normal?
• The Ballad of Dorothy Parker-(Sign O’ The Times) Boy meets girl over an free flowing jam using rather esoteric lyrics. Works for me.
• Diamonds and Pearls-(Diamonds and Pearls) Rosie Gaines completely makes this song.
• Uptown-(Dirty Mind) Funky Funky Funky. A anthem for personal freedom.
• Why You Wanna Treat Me So Bad?-(Prince) I remember hearing this song and asking, “Guitars? In an R&B song?” Yes!!
• I Would Die 4 You-(Purple Rain) This was my kind of love song. Plus, you got to do that cool hand thing.
• Do Me Baby-(Controversy) Included on everyone’s getting busy tape. Fine with me, even with Prince’s faux climax at the end. I have a feeling many a child has been conceived due to this song.
• The Most Beautiful Girl in the World-(The Gold Experience) Just a wonderful song from a man who really loves women.
• Little Red Corvette-(1999) The song that made Prince a crossover success. But even still, it kicks ass like nothing else.
• Pop Life-(Around the World in a Day) A tale of caution with a pop beat. Brilliant.
• U Got the Look-(Sign O’ The Times)  Another boy meets girl song, but who does them better than Prince?
• Adore-(Sign O’ The Times) Just another quiet storm classic. Prince just knew how to make the slow jams.

• 6.  Criminal Minded (Boogie Down Productions)-Victors of the Bronx vs. Queens War fro bragging rights, MC KRS-One and DJ Scott LaRock dropped Ciminal Minded  to high acclaim in 1987. Classics such as “Criminal Minded” and “South Bronx” moved the crowd and raised rap to a new consciousness. Sadly, LaRock was murdered in August of that year and even though BDP continued to turn out a steady stream of hits throughout the late ’80′s and early ’90′s one can’t help but wonder what further heights could they have attained if La Rock had lived.
• 7.  Vol. 2…Hard Knock Life (Jay-Z)-Yeah, yeah, yeah you can argue with me until the end of days that “Resonable Doubt” should be at this spot instead of Vol. 2. But, while few would disagree that the former solidified Jay’s status as rap’s heir apparent, no one would deny that the latter turned Jay into a rap superstar. Every track is solid and on point and it still sounds as fresh today as it did when it was released in 1998. Vol 2 also won the Grammy for Best Rap album. So there!
• 8.  The Chronic (Dr. Dre)-Call this Dr. Dre’s freedom song if you will. The Chronic was his declaration of independence from the looming shadows of Easy-E and Ice Cube. With this cd, Dre completely reconfigured West Coast Hip Hop and as a result, it became one of the best selling cd’s of the genre. Showcasing his extraordinary production skills, Dre tapped up and coming artists such as Snoop Doog, The Dogg Pound, and Lady of Rage to create some of the banginest hits in rap history. The Chronic is a true classic.
• 9.  Miss E…So Addictive (Missy Elliott)-Missy Elliott’s third solo outing is certainly her best. With her partner in crime Timbaland, Missy had always pushed the envelope. She might have been the first singer who could rap to break the charts, but she was and still is, the best. What she lacked in pure rap skill, she always made up with tantalizing beats and danceable melodies. Tell me that, “Old Skool Joint” or “Get Ur Freak On” won’t make you move something.
• 10. License to Ill (The Beastie Boys)-No this isn’t an Affirmative Action pick. If it was, I would have thrown Vanilla Ice up in this piece. License To Ill is one of the best rap cds ever made, period. Under the helm of Russell Simmons and Rick Rubin, Mike D, Ad Rock and MCA rapped about broads, beats, and booze with wry wit coupled with a touch of rock. It appealled to everyone from urban youth to frat boys. This was the cd that truly placed rap in the mainstream without losing an ounce of it’s edge. The Beastie Boys were never a parody, they were true hip hop artists and this cd shows why.

10 cds a music lover should own: hip hop/rap (part 1)

Ever get tired of reading an article or watching a news story about a list of what music you just have to have? Well have no fear; here’s another list. I make no secret that I love music. I upload a song everyday on my Facebook page. I listen to my IPOD anytime I’m out of the office and I have my ITunes bumping when I’m in it. My love for music crosses all genres, subgenre’s, ages, space, time, etc..etc.. What I’ve noticed is that most music addicts like me have a core set of CD’s/albums/mp3′s as part of their collections. I’ve decided to share mine with the world. If you agree, then you are indeed a real music lover. If you don’t, well these lists will help you get there. Let’s start off with Hip Hop/Rap.

1. The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill (Lauryn Hill)-When the indelible Ms. Hill dropped her solo debut in 1998, no one was prepared for the near flawless fusion of R &B and Rap that this CD delivered. Highly personal, fiercely artistic, and perfectly produced Miseducation showed who the real MVP of the Fugees was. Standout tracks such as “Lost Ones”, “Ex-Factor”, and “Everything Is Everything” make this CD a bonafide classic and a must have for any hip hop head.
2. Death Certificate (Ice Cube)-By the time Death Certificate dropped in 1991, Ice Cube had already been hailed as a premiere MC, but his second solo outing solidified that label. One of the first concept rap cd’s, Ice Cube spit tales of hope, despair, anger, and resignation with vivid imagery and rapid fire delivery. And without a doubt , “No Vaseline” is still one of the best dis records ever.
3. Mama Said Knock You Out (LL Cool J)-LL came back hard on his 4th cd released in 1990. While hip hop was becoming more militant and introspective, LL delivered more braggadocio and sex appeal and it completely worked. Cuts like “Boomin’ System” and “Round the Way Girl” became hip hop anthems. Mama Said truly gave LL a reason to call himself the G.O.A.T.
4. Doggstyle (Snoop Dogg)-No debut was as highly anticipated nor delivered on its promise as well as Snoop Dogg’s. Moving from Dr. Dre’s sidekick to premiere MC, Snoop rode the wave of West Coast Rap’s growing popularity to superstardom. Snoop was cut a unique figure with his languid cadence, clever wordplay, braids, and kahkis. Backed by Dr. Dre’s beats and guest appearances by the Dogg Pound, Nate Dogg and Lady of Rage, Doggystyle is the best solo rap debut ever.
5. Fear of a Black Planet (Public Enemy)- In the spring of 1990, “Fight The Power” was bumping through every stereo from New York to Los Angeles. Hip Hop fans finally had their own theme song  by way of Chuck D and his invenerate sideman Flava Flav. Fear of A Black Planetwas the cornerstone of political hip hop. Melding street knowledge with the philosophy of Nation of Islam, “Welcome to the Terrordome” and “911 Is A Joke” voiced the fear and frustration that  Reagan era politics inflicted upon the inner cities and small towns. With sparse drum beats and intelligent rhymes, Chuck and Flav didn’t rap for the sake of rhyming. They truly had something to say, and everyone listened.

Lady V’s Black Belt Theater

Remember back in the day on Saturday afternoons after American Bandstand and Soul Train went off, how eager you were to see what would be showing on “Black Belt Theater”? Didn’t you just love the fast and furious fighting, the clever acrobatics, the costumes, the weapons, and especially the bad dubbing? It’s no secret that I love Kung Fu movies, (hence my moniker) so I decided to share my list of best Kung Fu movies of all time.

• Masked Avengers-This classic from Shaw Brothers features the legendary Venoms Mob doing what they do best. This film ranks so high with me mainly because of the final fight scene. It is absolutely bananas. The plot is similar to any Venoms film you may see, but fight choreography is some of the best these guys have ever done. People may jump up and down on the Yuen Woo-Ping bandwagon, but for my money, the team of Kuo Choi, Chiang Shiang, and Lu Feng were the best fight coordinating team ever.
• Fist of Legend- Starring Jet Li in a superior remake of Bruce Lee’s seminal “Fists of Fury”, this film without a doubt features the best hand to hand, wireless, final fight I ever seen on film. Jet Li really solidifies his status as THE top film martial artist (sorry Jackie Chan fans). Everything about this film is top notch: the acting, the plot, and the art direction. It’s just one of those films where no matter how many times you see it, you just say, “Wow!”.
• Eight Diagram Pole Fighter- What’s a list of best Kung Fu movies without having at least one from the “Master Killer”, Gordon Liu? This dark and moving film was both a tribute to the late Alexander Fu Sheng who died during filming and to Liu Chia Liang’s outstanding direction. This film has definitely has one of the strangest end fights that I can ever remember. Coffins, Mongols with Flexi-Straw staffs, and flying teeth are indeed things you don’t see often, but Liang makes it work mainly on the strength of Liu’s performance. His anger is unrelenting and his quest for vengeance is unforgettable.
• The Shaolin Prince-Most non Kung Fu movie freaks will more than likely think that this film is rather silly. It does have it’s share of slapstick and bargain basement special effects, but it also has the majestic Ti Lung and dagger -spewing chair. A dagger-spewing chair folks! Tang Chia only directed three movies but his style is unmistakable. Just look for the elaborate fighting formations, that’s his trademark. Oh, and the fact that cutie pie Derek Yee Tung Sing stars in this as well doesn’t hurt at all.
• Blade of Fury-I’ll tell you this now. I’ve never been a fan of the wire-fu Wushu epics that became popular in the mid to late ’90′s. I could suspend belief on some things (I’m a Harry Potter fangirl), but seeing people run up tree branches and fight 300 feet in the air is too much for even me. Also, the use of wires can never really cover up the lack of skill (I’m looking at you, Maggie Chung!). However, one film does stand out and that’s Sammo Hung’s “Blade of Fury”. Fans of Kung Fu movies should be well acquainted with Hung’s background. He’s a buddy of Jackie Chan’s and a supreme martial artist in his own right so naturally the fighting in this film is way above par anything that Tsui Hark in his “Once Upon A Time in China ” series could conjure up. Ti Lung co-stars as a heroic official but he doesn’t do much fighting. That’s fine. The other actors more than make up for Ti’s minimal fighting. The plot is standard but the performances are really good.
• Avenging Eagle- Yes, another Ti Lung movie but the man is a favorite of mine. Part melodrama, part revenge saga; Ti Lung excels as the anti-hero. He’s a trained killer who has a change of heart. Alexander Fu Sheng shines as well as a mysterious stranger with a secret. To me, this pairing of two Shaw Brothers greats was always more intriguing than the Ti Lung/David Chiang one that dominated the Chang Cheng directed films in the early ’70′s. With villains galore and more weapons than you can imagine, this film can be found on many a Kung Fu aficionado’s list.
• Shaghai 13- When Shaw Brothers films was on its last legs in the mid ’80′s, director Chang Cheh set out to make a last hurrah for the days of great old school Kung Fu by assembling some of the top stars of the genre. Everyone and I mean everyone is in this film: Jimmy Wang Yu, Chun Kua-Tai, David Chiang, Wang Chung, Lu Feng, Chiang Sheng, Chen Tee-Chi, and of course Ti Lung. Even an extremely young Andy Lau makes an appearance. Wall to wall fights of the highest caliber dominate .So much so that you don’t even remember what the plot is about. If you must know, it’s about a whistle blower who needs protection from the infamous Shanghai 13. A rare classic for those who just love to see good old fashioned fighting.
